About Galvanized Iron Craftsmanship
Galvanized iron craft is popular in the 1950s but has gradually faded out in Hong Kong. It is about joining metal sheets with different bending techniques and its unique seams and locks without welding, using pin or glue. The random “snowflake” pattern on the metal sheet surface is also one of its iconic elements. Such pattern is highlighted in the lantern through the reflection of different geometric folds.
About Naam Yu,
Galvanized iron / Product designer
Thanks to ICH+, Naam started to learn galvanized iron craft in 2020 from master Michael Yu, who has engaged in the galvanized iron industry for nearly 40 years in HK. Nowadays, Naam is trying to bring this “old” craft back to modern daily life by combining the traditional and modern way of fabrications.
